Providence Skills Center Celebrates 1st Anniversary

CCAP's Learn to Earn program at The Providence Skills Center recently celebrated its one year anniversary of moving to the Providence Place Mall.  The Learn to Earn Program is very successful in reaching out to and engaging youth who have dropped out of school, have few job skills and need to get their lives back on track.  In the past year one word can describe our accomplishments:

S U C C E S S

Real Life Education, Real Life Jobs

Since August 1, 2006 CCAP's Learn to Earn program has received 1,073 phone calls inquiring about the program. To date, we have enrolled 75 participants or 94% of our contracted 80 participants.

During the 2005/06 program year, CCAP’s youth workforce programs administered TABE tests to 451 people, 49 received their GED, 33 graduates are employed, 4 are in secondary education, 2 are in advance training programs and 1 is in the Air Force. Our current programs will provide academic, social/Life and job skills to 80 participants. All current programs are on target to be equally successful.

CCAP's Learn to Earn Program provides a full range of services, all directed at ensuring the youth achieves his/her goals. We provide basic educational instruction to improve academic skills that lead to grade and/or skill increases and a GED.

CCAP uses an empowerment based Case Management model that is incorporated into the program design. This approach is based on a positive youth development model that focuses and builds on a youngster’s strengths and abilities. As a community action agency, CCAP, or another RI CAP, can provide supportive services to the youth and his/her family.

The Learn to Earn program provides real life job skills and advance training certification programs that can lead to well paying employment. The NRF Customer Service Certification and CVS Pharmacy Tech programs are examples of trainings that offer youth opportunities to learn valuable skills that can lead to well paying employment.

Our commitment doesn't stop at graduation or employment. The Learn to Earn staff meets on a regular basis with graduates for at least one year after leaving the program.

Collaboration Works!

CCAP is one of the founding partners of the Providence Skills Center located at the Providence Place Mall. The Providence Skills Center opened January 10, 2006 and has been an overwhelming success.

The success of the program is made possible by the dedication of the Providence Skills Center's Board of Directors, staff and the funding and operational support we receive from our partners:

  • Workforce Solutions of Providence/Cranston
  • Workforce Partnership of Greater RI
  • RI Department of Education
  • RI Department of Labor
  • National Retail Foundation
  • RI Retail Federation
  • CVS Corporation
  • General Growth Properties (Providence Place Mall)
  • Greater Providence Chamber of Commerce
  • City of Providence

The Providence Skills Center has become a valuable community resource for people seeking educational and job training services.

The average daily attendance at the Providence Skills Center is 70 participants. As an example of how the Center is utilized, on January 16th there were 100 people participating in programs at the Skills Center. Eleven were being TABE tested, 35 were in GED classes, 15 in pre-GED, 7 in a customer service class, 17 in the CVS Pharmacy Tech class and another 15 in an evening GED class.
